The Restoration of Waban Kettle Pond>
In 1995, a group of neighboring
homeowners approached Pamela Hart Landscape Services for a solution
to a shared problem. Their backyards bordered what was once
a glacial kettle pond but that was now reduced by erosion and
contamination to a half-acre wasteland. Contaminated by roof
runoff, street debris and lawn fertilizers, the pond's eroding
banks were overgrown with exotic plant species, such as purple
loosestrife and Norway maples. Pamela Hart Landscape Services
was faced with the challenge of removing the invasive plants
and replacing them with the pond's original plant community;
removing contaminated soils, providing access to surrounding
homeowners; and building enough stone structures, such as boulder
dikes, catch basins, and retention basins to prevent the need
for dredging the pond in the future. We also addressed the task
of educating the surrounding home-owners throughout the restoration
process.
